Making a difference

This morning I was reflecting on how challenging it is to meet the needs of all the students in our care, and I was reminded of the starfish story:

While walking along a beach, a little boy noticed many starfish strewn along the beach above the high tide line by the storm the night before.  He knew that as the sun climbed higher, it would dry the starfish out and they would die. He did what any reasonable person would do, he responded to the need and began throwing them back into the water.

A man was coming down the beach and noticed what the boy was up to. Puzzled, he asked why.  Patiently the boy explained the plight of the many starfish left high and dry.  Patiently the man explained that there were many miles of beach and thousands of starfish in each mile. He helpfully pointed out that what the boy was doing couldn’t possibly make a difference.

The boy listened.  Then when the man was finished, he picked up another starfish and threw it back into the ocean.  "Well," he said "I just made a difference for that one."  The man shook his head, bent down and picked up a starfish.

We cannot possibly solve all the problems of the world, but we can make a difference with the people we encounter.
