more Mid-century concrete block

The more I get out, the more I see these things everywhere!

Mid-century concrete block fences

I have been becoming aware of the (ubiquity) and variety of concrete block fences and walls in the neighbourhood just east of Fraser Street around 48th avenue. On my daily ride to work, I pass a collection of houses that have these fences, and have begun to really look at them.  I took a few shots of them while I was out walking the dog this morning, but I realize that  there is a lot more to this than I first thought.

Truffula Tree

I rescued an unwanted potted plant last June. It spent the summer on my front porch, and now has moved in due to the cold weather.  It is long and spindly, but somewhat lovely in a Charlie-Brown-Christmas-Tree sort of way.

A gift in the back yard

This is a fine looking bird!  I think it is a Coopers Hawk. I am especially fond of his eyes.

Getting Ready for a 100Km ride

Getting Ready for a 100Km ride on October 15th means putting in the hours  -training on my bicycle.  Sometimes it means getting up early to do riding before work.  As this picture attests, there are rewards for being up early.

Lake Malawi

This picture, taken at the shore of Lake Malawi, gives you a postcard perfect view.

In contrast, a typical view along a road.

Along the tracks on East Kent Avenue

Where could you go by rail from here?
A beautiful yellow weed.
A thistle for my Scottish forebears.
The end of the road?

Happy to see me?

even my morning coffee
seems cheerful
and
happy to see me.

Fire escape abstract

I just love the variety of textures here coupled with the vibrant colours.  I passed this alley downtown today and just had to take a picture or two.

another one bites the dust

It is not a joy, but it is a wonder how quickly a house can move from being a home, to an empty house to a pile of rubble.  It takes weeks, months even to build a house, and only a day to reduce it to a lowly pile of rubble.  So much value can be destroyed in a few short hours.
The monster came by night, clanking, startling, roaring, sputtering, smoking. It sat owning the road, waiting for dawn and its moment to strike.  I was not there when the deed was done, but when I returned home the next evening, the house was wrecked.  The work of a few hours, and the next day they came to cart away the bones.
And then what?  Build, use, discard, repeat?

These Four Photos Belong together because......

These four photos are together because they tend to be semi abstract photos, or at least lean towards thinking of being semi abstract.

More Moon

The full moon in the sky is a wonder, but look closer and it is even more wonderful. A few years ago a friend, Ken in Ontario, set up his 4"? telescope and let us have a look at the wonders of the night sky> I snapped this shot with a point and shoot held up to the eyepiece.

- makes me think of parts of Psalm 104 verses 19 and 24

He made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.
How many are your works, LORD!
   In wisdom you made them all;

Moon

a Wonder of the night sky

What a difference eleven seconds can make!

The joy of success

Watching the game with my youngest son, at a friend's house, the moment Burrows scored, 11 seconds into Overtime, we scrambled to get to the Canada Line.  When we emerged onto Georgia Street, we were greeted by thousands of joyful fans. We were carried along with the crowd.  They were smiling, hooting, hollering and giving high fives - a spontaneous celebration of shared joy.
